Do you use Late Passes in your class?
In an effort to curb “Please oh please oh please Ms. N…I did it but I forgot it at home! I know it’s supposed to be a zero but just accept it this one time!” every day of my life, I began to use Late Passes.
Each student gets one at the beginning of the semester. That way I don’t decide whether something is really a valid reason or not for it being late. The students decide when they want to sacrifice their Late Pass.
It works great.
I might need this idea! I do give out passes (Subway Cards) to the students at the beginning of the year with boxes that get initialed by me that allow them to run to a locker or the bathroom if they need to get something or use the bathroom in the first minutes of the class.
This teacher uses late passes to help students be their own “bad guy” and self regulate their excuses. Of course this must be balanced in that we do need to learn to be prompt.
